The Byte - Google buy approved, robots play hockey, HDDs soar, Sony’s Smart Socket
The European Commission and US Department of Justice approved Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Hard disk drive prices will remain unusually high until 2014 due to flooding in Thailand. A humanoid robot named Jennifer shoots and scores on the ice. Sony Smart Sockets can control power consumption by appliance, user or power source.

Video: The Byte - Microsoft WOA, iPad 3, Android testing lab, gun vs. laptop
Microsoft released the technical design details for Windows on ARM. Apple will intro the iPad 3 in early March and it will have a number of upgrades. NTT DoCoMo is preparing an elaborate Android test center to help developers cope with the multitude of devices and range of software versions avaialble. A father disgruntled over his daughter's Facebook post pumped nine rounds of lead into her laptop.

Video: The Byte - Yahoo starts fresh, Nokia layoffs, Chrome for Android 4.0, President Obama's science fair
More than half of Yahoo's board will be new, setting the stage for a fresh start for incoming CEO Scott Thompson. Nokia will lay off 4,000 workers and move more of its production facilities to Asia before the end of 2012. Google's Chrome browser will come to Android 4.0 devices and sync bookmarks and autocomplete data across devices. At the White House Science Fair President Barack Obama launched a marshmallow with an eighth grader's air cannon.

Smartphones outshipped PCs and tablets for the first time in 2011. Subway riders in cities worldwide are getting snapped by admiring riders.

The Byte, Feb. 3, 2012 Today on The Byte: Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that Sony's losses aren't his fault. Google has to pay a fine to a French mapping company for undercutting competitors. RIM cuts the price of its Playbook again, hoping to clear out inventory. Android Market malware is reduced by 40 percent by an application scanner called Bounce.

The Byte, Jan. 31, 2012 Sources in the Taiwan smartphone supply chain say that a number of device makers are delaying new models on the heels of the iPhone's record success. Samsung still isn't allowed to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the latest ruling in Germany and the European Commission is also investigating the company for breach of competition law Toshiba and Fujitsu joined other tech companies in Japan as they booked deep losses in their latest quarter.
