Video: Intel Labs focused on realistic 3D avatar simulation at anniversary event

Intel researchers are proud of their partnerships with academic labs across the country. Intel is showcasing some of the academic projects alongside Intel’s own work to mark the 10th anniversary of Research at Intel.

Frank “I could walk around this whole room and see things I like. I’m a geek that way.”

Frank Crow is the liason for Intel’s academic programs for visual computing—which means he coordinates research at many of the college’s demonstrating here today.

He’s huddled up with well-known scientist Pat Hanrahan at an area both are excited about that has to do with the way virtual objects and virtual people are evolving.

Students at Berkeley and Cornell are working on projects that make realistic virtual clothing. To get it right, students are even studying looms to understand how different weaves change fabric.

Crow says it will take 5 to 10 years for the fabric to be realistic enough to fully be utilized the way … THIS star Intel display would like.

Nat “I like the red dress”

This is Intel’s Magic Glass display—a screen that can scan a person’s body and let people realistically try clothes on in the virtual mirror.

“I’ve been working on this for about a year and a half.”

DelNOTtoe says Intel is in talks with a few companies who are interested in bringing magic glass to their dressing rooms now, but it’s too early to say which ones.

But first, the Intel-funded research into fabrics will have to hurry up.

Frank “Our research could make magic glass a star…”
