Video: BMW unveils Spyder Concept car

BMW unveiled its flashy i8 Spyder Concept this weekend making this the third sustainable concept car created by the company.

This plug-in hybrid has an electric motor on the front axle and an internal combustion engine in the rear which gives the car balance and a low center of gravity.  Connecting the two units is the hybrid battery that can store extra power generated by the engine for long-range functionality between charging stations. Although it can only run for 19 miles on electric power alone when fully charged, the Spyder Concept can go from 0 to 60 in five seconds and gets 94 miles to the gallon.  The lithium-ion battery can be recharged quickly from any domestic power outlet.

The driver can control the power distribution between the front and back wheels to adjust to fluctuating driving conditions.  Some notable features of this open-top 2-seater are the Collision Warning system, Parking and Traffic Jam assistants, and the windowless upward-opening doors.  And despite its smaller design, the rear U-shaped lights and semi-transparent “V” outline on the hood give the car a wide appearance.

The i8 Concept Spyder is one in a few designs developed by the BMW Group to redefine and reinvent the sustainable sports car model.  BMW does not currently have plans to commercialize this concept car.
