Video: The Byte - Apple injunction, Wi-Fi grounded, smartphones outship, subway pics

The Byte, Feb. 6, 2012

Apple removes then restores some products in its online store in Germany.

In flight Wi-Fi remains unprofitiable with only 7 percent of the traveling public using the service.

Smartphones outshipped PCs and tablets for the first time in 2011.

Subway riders in cities worldwide are getting snapped by admiring riders.

Apple removed some of its products from its online store serving Germany due to a court injunction in its dispute with Motorola but began selling them after a quick suspension of that injunction. It affected the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and 3G iPads.

In flight Wifi service has yet to take off, with only 7% of the traveling public using it on US flights. The big reason, many airports now offer free wifi which beats paying 10 dollars for a flight of a few hours. At 7% usage the service isn't profitable yet.

Smartphones shipments outpaced personal computers, including tablets, laptops, netbooks and desktops, for the first time in 2011. Smartphone shipments grew last year by 63%, while the PC market only 15%. Apple was the leader in both phones and PCs.

Subway riders in cities worldwide, get ready for your close up. A network of sites is hoping to match travelers with their commuter crushes. The sites encourage picture submissions of other riders so next time you're underground be on the lookout.
