Video analysis: Is the Galaxy Note a small tablet or a big smartphone?

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note at IFA last week, the company is hoping to define a new category of mobile devices. Just as Steve Jobs said the tablet is the bridge between computers and smartphones, Samsung is hoping that it can convince consumers that the Galaxy Note is the bridge between smartphones and tablets. With a 5.3in screen the Note is a little too large to be a phone, but a little too small to be a tablet. Samsung also brought back the stylus as one option, in addition to touch, to control the device. In a world that has become so touch oriented since Apple popularized the touchscreen, O’Donnell feels like we’re going back in time. I think the Galaxy Note is an interesting product. In some ways it’s sort of a throwback, right? A 5-inch phone with a stylus makes it feel like a PDA. The reality is that large phones have never done particularly well. The Dell Streak didn't do particularly well. I think Samsung is going to be pretty challenged with this product. I'm not sure that people really miss the stylus. Granted the S Pen can do more than the one you used to use on your Palm Pilot. It’s pressure sensitive and when coupled with the software Samsung is offering, it'll allow you to take notes, draw sketches, annotate screens and even collaborate across multiple devices. Still convincing consumers to use a stylus might be as hard as convincing them to hold a 5.3in phone to their ears. Whether or not the Galaxy Note will be a success remains to be seen, but we’ll have an answer by the end of this year when the device goes on sale.
