Barcelona's MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2015 kicks off today, and many of the press events were already held this weekend. We tell you what to expect from all the biggest exhibitors, including Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, Huawei, Microsoft, Google and Motorola, and round up the top news stories and live video streams from MWC 2015. Also see: Best new phones you should be most excited about in 2015.
Scheduled for 2-5 March, MWC 2015 is happening right now. For all you fans of mobile tech products it's the highlight of the calendar with CES only bringing a handful of devices this year – namely the LG G Flex 2.
We're in mainland Europe to bring you full coverage of the show, and here is what to expect from the big names which will be exhibiting in Barcelona including smartphones, tablets and wearables.
News from MWC 2015: Samsung
Samsung's event saw the Korean giant unleash the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. The company also announced Samsung Pay - a rival to Apple Pay and Google Wallet - and a new VR headset.
News from MWC 2015: HTC
News from MWC 2015: Sony
Like Samsung, Sony stuck to other areas at CES despite rumours of the Xperia Z4 being unveiled. The big news was that Sony didn't bother with a live event, and didn't launch the expected Xperia Z4 and Xperia Z4 Compact smartphones. In fact we saw a new Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet. It had already announced the new budget Xperia E4.
Sony also announced the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, a mid-ranged smartphone
What to expect from MWC 2015: LG
LG is the other manufacturer in the big four for MWC and although it did announce the LG G Flex 2 at CES, we're expecting a lot more in Barcelona.
Last year, LG announced the G3 at a London based event in May so it's no certainty that the G4 will arrive in March at MWC. In fact, an LG exec said it won't happen according to The Chosun: "We rolled out the G3 in May last year so we do not plan to unveil the G4 at this year's Mobile World Congress and spend more time perfecting the new phone."
Despite that quote, there's still a chance and the firm will probably announce other smartphones and tablets such as new L-series devices and hopefully a replacement for the LG G Pad 8.3. Read all the LG G4 rumours here.
On the wearable side of things, we wouldn't be surprised to see something new to follow on from the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R - perhaps something more on the fitness tracker side of things.
What to expect from MWC 2015: Huawei
The Chinese vendor will be present in Barcelona this year and has a press conference scheduled for Sunday 1 March at 3pm. The save the date we've been sent gives no clues as to what will be announced but has confirmed to TechRadar that it will launch an Android Wear smartwatch this year. MWC seems like most likely place to unveil it and the event invitation appears to confirm it. The invitation suggests you'll be able to take a phone call on the device which also seems to have a camera built into the strap.
Although it seemed the launch of the Ascend P8 would take place at MWC this year. Huawei has confirmed to multiple tech media sites that the smartphone will actually be launched in London on 15 April. The Ascend P7 was launched in Paris and the Ascend P6 was launched in London.
Huawei has also confirmed it will launch at least one new tablet.
What to expect from MWC 2015: Microsoft
Microsoft doesn’t normally have a big presence at shows like MWC but will be in Barcelona this year. A press conference will take place at 8:30am on 2 March.
“Mobile is transforming communication, advancing the next payment system that alters commerce, and expanding ways in which we interact. Similarly, the world’s premier industry continues to expand. Once again taking place at Fira Gran Via – the world-class venue in the heart of the Mobile World Capital. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to witness the industry’s continued expansion and growth,” said the firm.
Although that doesn’t give much away we expect to hear more about Windows 10 on smartphones and tablets. We could certainly see some new devices unveiled but a new flagship Lumia (the Lumia 940?) is less likely and will probably be announced later in the year closer to the full launch of Windows 10.
If you can’t wait to get Windows 10 on your phone you can download the Technical Preview now if you have a selected Lumia handset and don’t mind running buggy software.
What to expect from MWC 2015: Google
Google normally announces Nexus smartphones and tablets at its own launch events such as Google I/O. However, the rumour mill suggests Google will present is modular smartphone called Project Ara at MWC this year.
A total of 50 components will supposedly be on display as well as a complete working handset.
What to expect from MWC 2015: Motorola
Now owned by Lenovo, we're not expecting a huge amount from Motorola at MWC. It's just launched various smartphones in China.
A new version of the budget Moto E is thought to be announced in Barcelona, though. It's probably going to be called the Moto E 4G and has already shown up on BestBuy in the US. A 2015 version of the Moto G 2014 also with added 4G LTE support is a possibility and don't rule out a new model of the Moto 360 smartwatch although Motorola just announced three new bands for it.
