Xiaomi held its Global Mi Phone Premiere event in the Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi, India at 10.30am UK time on Thursday 23 April 2015. Xiaomi CEO and founder Lei Jun and president Bin Lin were in attendance, although it was global vice president Hugo Barra up on stage. The event was streamed in English online, which we are hosting at the top of this page. Also see: Xiaomi Mi Note & Mi Note Pro UK release date, price and specs.
How to watch Xiaomi Mi 4i launch: What to expect from the new Xiaomi Mi 4i
According to reports before the Global Mi Phone Premiere, Xiaomi was gearing up to take the wraps off either the new Xiaomi Mi5 or Xiaomi Mi 4i. Most whispers pointed to the Mi 4i, which was expected to be a cheaper version of last year's flagship Xiaomi Mi4, reportedly swapping its metal and glass for a plastic build. In a Xiaomi Mi 4i we were expecting to see the same 5in full-HD (1080p) touchscreen as is found on the Mi4, but inside the specs were reportedly downgraded to meet what one source suggested could be a price as low as 999 yuan - a tiny £107. Among those slimmed-down specs is a 1.65GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor with Adreno 405 graphics, in place of the Mi4's Snapdragon 801 chip, and 2- rather than 3GB of RAM. Other rumoured specs include 16GB of storage, dual-SIM dual-standby connectivity with more LTE bands than the Mi4, plus 5Mp front- and 13Mp rear cameras. The Xiaomi Mi4i will run MIUI 6, which is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Also see: Best phones 2015.
It turns out the rumours were true. The Xiaomi Mi 4i has a 5in full-HD (1080p, 441ppi) JDI IPS screen with Sunlight Display, a second-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor (1.7GHz quad, 1.1GHz quad), 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Storage expansion wasn't mentioned during the event, which leads us to think microSD is not supported.
The Xiaomi Mi 4i is a dual-SIM dual-standby phone, with both SIMs able to use 4G. Other connectivity options include 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, GLONASS and USB OTG. Also expect a 3120mAh battery with 1.5 days life with normal usage.
The rear camera is a 13Mp Sony/Samsung model with a dual-tone LED flash and support for HDR. The 5Mp selfie camera enables Beautify mode by default, which takes into account your age - eight-year-old girls don't need much in the way of wrinkle removal, for example.
The Xiaomi Mi 4i is the first Xiaomi handset running MIUI 6 to be based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The best bit about the Xiaomi Mi 4i is its price - Rs 12,999 (£136). That makes it significantly cheaper than comparable phones such as the Samsung Galaxy A7 and HTC Desire 826. It goes on sale on 30 April via Flipkart, and will be available in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and India from May.
It's worth pointing out that Xiaomi does not officially sell its phones in the UK. However, it's usually possible to buy them through Chinese sites such as Geekbuying, GearBest and Coolicool. If you decide to go ahead and buy a Xiaomi phone, read our advice on buying grey-market tech.
Prior to the event Xiaomi unveiled a series of teasers for its new 'i' phone, which appear to refer to it having a very good screen, big battery and yet compact size. We have posted these teasers below. Also see: Best Android phones 2015.
