Top 5 sub-£500 desktop PCs you can buy

PC Advisor reviews the best five desktop PCs available now in the UK for less than £500.

Medion Akoya P2002
  • Reviewed on: 21 August 13
  • RRP: £450 inc. VAT
  • Rating: Rated 7 out of 10

This is a basic, no-frills all-in-one with adequate performance, no Blu-ray drive and no touch screen. However, at this low price, it represents excellent value for money and even comes with a built-in Freeview tuner.

4. Zotac Nano XS AD13 Plus

  • Reviewed on: 11 April 13
  • RRP: £300 inc VAT
  • Rating: Rated 8 out of 10

The miniest of mini PCs, the Zotac Nano XS AD13 occupies less space than the cables you’ll be plugging into it. Performance is merely adequate in numerical terms, but highly impressive when you consider the PCs tiny dimensions. Excellent connectivity options are provided, but Wi-Fi comes via an external bundled adaptor.

3. Quiet PC UltraNUC

Quiet PC UltraNUC
  • Reviewed on: 2 October 13
  • RRP: £376.58 inc. VAT
  • Rating: Rated 8 out of 10

The UltraNUC looks underpowered compared to other desktop PCs, and it quickly becomes expensive when you opt for a higher specification. However, what's on offer even with the base unit is an unusually small PC which itself attracts a price premium. In this niche it offers reasonably good value for money. Attached to the rear of a monitor it could make the basis of a relatively cheap all-in-one PC.

2. Apple Mac mini (Late 2012 with Fushion Drive)

Apple Mac mini (Late 2012 with Fushion Drive)
  • Reviewed on: 11 April 13
  • RRP: £959 inc VAT
  • Rating: Rated 8 out of 10

Beautiful, minimalist design combined with wonderful build quality make the slick Mac mini a highly attractive proposition. It’s also capable of class-leading performance when fitted with the quad-core here, although it will be harder to keep cool. It comes with a massive 1TB hybrid drive and an equally massive price; or you can investigate the entry Core i5 model that starts at just £499.

1. Fujitsu Esprimo Q520

Fujitsu Esprimo Q520
  • Reviewed on: 11 November 13
  • RRP: £389 inc. VAT
  • Rating: Rated 9 out of 10

The Fujitsu Esprimo Q520 is a truly powerful business PC, with excellent ergonomics and superb build quality. It's much larger than the smallest mini PCs but also considerably less expensive and incorporates a DVD burner and internal power supply.
