Group test: What's the best portable Bluetooth speaker?

The best portable Bluetooth speaker

PC Advisor reviews six of the best portable Bluetooth speakers you can buy in the UK today.

Soundmatters foxL v21. Soundmatters foxL v2

  • RatingRated 9 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 5 April 13
  • RRP: £169 inc. VAT

The Soundmatters foxL v2 is a very compact speaker for laptops, smartphones and iPads whose sound quality belies its tiny 14cm long size..

2. Braven 650

  • RatingRated 8 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 9 November 12
  • RRP: £160 inc. VAT

Apple doesn’t currently support Apt-X in its iOS devices, so you could certainly save some money by opting for one of the less expensive models in the Braven range. However, the sturdy design, robust sound and long battery life of the Braven 650 make it one of the best pocket-sized portable speaker systems currently available.

3. Jabra Solemate

  • RatingRated 8 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 19 October 12
  • RRP: £95 inc. VAT

The Jabra Solemate is a portable Bluetooth speaker that produces great sound with a strong bass, but its £149 price tag might make buyers hesitant.

4. Damson Cisor

  • RatingRated 8 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 14 November 12
  • RRP: £75 inc. VAT

The bass does get a bit out of control at times, but the Cisor is certainly one of the best of this new breed of ‘resonating’ speakers.

5. Gear4 Xorb

  • RatingRated 8 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 1 February 13
  • RRP: £50 inc. VAT

The Xorb’s 30W output is fairly loud, but its compact design means that it doesn’t produce the most expansive sound. It’s probably not quite beefy enough to be used as the main speaker system in your front room, but it’s a good, affordable choice if you need a compact speaker for your bedroom, or for a small studio apartment.

6. House of Marley Chant

  • RatingRated 7 out of 10
  • Reviewed on: 8 April 13
  • RRP: £79 inc. VAT

There's room for improvement in battery life, but the slim, light design of the S7 is hard to beat if you're looking for a really portable laptop that has enough power to handle some serious work when you're away from the mains.
