There are no prizes for guessing that the iPad mini is smaller and lighter than the iPad 4. The former measures in at 135 x 200mm, while the latter measures 186 x 241mm.

The iPad mini is both thinner and lighter than its bigger brother. The iPad mini measures in at 7.2mm and 308g and the iPad with Retina display is 9.4mm and 652g. This is nearly 25 percent thinner and more than 50 percent lighter.

Apple iPad mini vs iPad 4: Screen

The iPad with Retina display uses the tried and tested 9.7in screen size which Apple has used since the original iPad. Swap the numbers around and you get the 7.9in screen which the iPad mini sports.

Both use an aspect ratio of 4:3 but have different resolutions. The iPad 4 uses the same 2048 x 1536 introduce with the iPad 3, or ‘the new iPad’. For the iPad mini, Apple has used 1024 x 768 matching that of the original iPad and iPad 2 but on a smaller screen.

Apple iPad mini vs iPad 4:  Processor

Apple tends to share very little about its processors but what we can tell you is that the iPad has the A5 dual-core processor found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. In the latter the chip is clocked at 1GHz. The iPad 4, on the other hand, has a new chip – the A6X which is a dual-core processor with quad-core graphics.

Apple iPad mini vs iPad 4: Storage

For both iPads Apple has stuck to its usual offering of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. As per usual, there is no room for expansion because there’s no microSD card slot.

Apple iPad mini vs iPad 4: Cameras

Just like the storage, the iPad mini and iPad 4 have an identical set of cameras. These consist of a 5Mp rear facing iSight camera and a 1.2Mp front facing FaceTime HD (720p) webcam. Video can be recorded from the rear camera at 1080p HD resolution.

As you’ll have noticed from the price table, there are also Wi-Fi and cellular models available which adds GPS into the mix as well as mobile broadband. Both the iPad mini and iPad 4 support 3G and 4G LTE frequencies in the UK. A small difference here is that the iPad 4 uses a Micro-SIM and and the iPad mini uses Nano-SIM.
