It’s great now we can all be super mobile, setting ourselves free from the desktop, and even ditching the laptop for a tablet or relying on our smartphones.
But, except for a power cut, we rarely suffered power outages on our old-school computers.
With a smartphone or tablet, running out of power can be a daily woe – especially if you’re using it as your main device.
No matter how organized you are – recharging batteries overnight, minimising usage – every now and again you’ll be half way through something (writing an email, watching a movie, about to finish Level 4 of the latest app game) when you get that 5% low battery warning.
But larger mobile devices, such as the Apple iPad, require a lot more spare juice for a midday refill.

Also from Mophie, the Juice Pack Powerstation Pro is a beast of an external rechargeable battery for all your mobile tech.
The Powerstation Pro packs a massive 4,000mAh capacity – enough, by our tests, to charge a flat iPhone nearly two and a half times over.
Sadly the iPad is another matter – even the giant 4,000mAh capacity won’t give the iPad a full charge, but it’s enough to watch a movie if your tablet gives up during a long flight.
Using the Mophie Powerstation Pro we charged a dead iPad up to 36% battery charge.
It pretty lightweight – at just over 200g it wouldn’t worry you to carry in your hand luggage or add much at all to your suitcase in the hold.
It’s small but not minute – 115mm long, 75mm wide and 30mm deep.
And it’s robust – with an impact and splash-resistant casing that makes it as rugged as the mountain you might climb up with it. The battery charger is IP65 rated, so it’s dust and water resistant when its ports are closed. That’s resistant to water being sprayed at it with a water-jet, but not fully waterproof, mind.
Most Powerstation pro users won’t be braving the elements in the wild but popping out with the charger in their shoulder bag so this level of protection is overkill for the majority. Still better safe than sorry.
The Mophie Powerstation Pro is compatible with a bunch of the most popular mobile devices, including all the Apple iPhones, iPad and iPods, and smartphones and tablets from Samsung, BlackBerry, HTC, LG, Motorola, etc. There’s a compatibility chart online, but it looks like it needs updating, as the new iPad and Samsung Galaxy S3 weren’t included at the time of writing.
We’re assured it does work with these mobile devices.
The bottom side houses both a full-sized USB port and micro USB port – each protected with a chunky rubber cover. There’s a button on one side, which turns on the four battery indicator lights.
It comes with a micro USB cable for charging with a computer, and you could plug the USB end into a wall power outlet adapter, like you get with the iPhone or iPad.
Unlike the Juice Pack Air iPhone battery case you can’t charge a device while charging the Powerstation itself, as it doesn’t have pass-through capability.
