SanDisk Extreme 240GB SSD review

£139 inc VAT

Manufacturer: SanDisk

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

The SanDisk Extreme is a 240GB SSD that offers good value for money. Here's our SanDisk Extreme 240GB SSD review.

Much faster than previous-generation SSDs and offering very low price per gigabyte SanDisk Extreme SSD offers only mediocre write performance. See also, buying advice: Sandisk Extreme SSD 120GB/240GB review: too little too late?

The SanDisk Extreme Solid State Drive (SSD) uses SanDisk's latest digital storage technology to boost your computer's performance. Ideal for computer enthusiasts and gamers, this SSD delivers our fastest data speeds, long-lasting reliability, and low power consumption. See all storage reviews.

SanDisk's Extreme SSD is a study in extremes, at least pricewise. We found the drive selling online for anything from around £120 to £160. It averages out around £139, which puts the drive's price per gigabyte at a tiny 59p. This is a value SSD. See also: Group test: what's the best SSD (solid-state drive)?

The SanDisk Extreme is poky compared with the fleet-footed Samsung 840 Pro 256GB. But it's a whole lot cheaper and it still blows away the fastest mechanical drive.

SanDisk Extreme SSD - performance results

In spite of using toggle-mode NAND and a SandForce SF-2281 controller, the Extreme produced overall performance that left it in last place in our roundup. It read our 10GB mix of files and folders at 384.9 MBps, and it wrote them at 308.7 MBps. With a single 10GB file, those numbers jumped to 440.6 MBps and 409.1 MBps. While those numbers aren’t in the same league as the results we saw from the Samsung 840 Pro and OCZ Vector 256GB SSD, they are 80 percent better than what you get from the fastest mechanical hard drive you can buy.

The SanDisk Extreme ships as a bare drive with no accoutrements—not even the mounting bracket and screws that most drives come with. That deficiency, and the three-year warranty, detract only slightly from the drive’s bargain appeal.
