Norton Antivirus 2007

£40 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Symantec

Our Rating: We rate this 4.5 out of 5

Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2007 is a solid antivirus tool, our review shows an overall virus-detection rate of 96 percent.

Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2007 is a solid performer, with an overall virus detection rate of 96 percent, placing it firmly in the upper echelon of the test group. Like our other top products, it sports an attractive and easy-to-use interface. It was the slowest to respond to virus outbreaks, however, taking 10 to 12 hours on average to deliver new signatures. And, like Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0's, its proactive protection is only middling: it caught about half of the unknown threats in our test.

At a recommended retail price of £40, Norton is one of the more expensive antivirus options. But check out the web offers in the Pricegrabber box below, and you'll see that bargains are available

Norton performed well in our disinfection tests, second only to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0. It cleaned up 18 out of 22 possible items, missing only one of the two changes to the Hosts network settings file and three less-important Registry items.

Symantec has incorporated the new SONAR behavioural analysis technology for proactive protection. The program scans both email and web traffic, covering the POP3, SMTP, and HTTP protocols. And it ties into the MSN, Yahoo and AOL instant messaging programs (though it protects only MSN by default).

During our testing under Windows Vista Ultimate of Norton AntiVirus's design and ease of use, the program turned off the built-in Windows Defender antispyware utility without notice. This is not because the utility conflicts, according to the company, but because Symantec feels 'Windows Defender offers no value beyond what Norton offers.' BitDefender was the only other program to disable Defender when it installed.

Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2007 was also the only program that triggered multiple UAC (User Account Control) alerts when we changed settings, which could easily annoy power users more likely to customise the app.

  • McAfee VirusScan Plus 2010 review

    McAfee VirusScan Plus 2010

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2010 does well with traditional, signature-based malware detection, but it delivered a large number of false positives and fumbled on essentials such as proactive protection and scan speed.

  • BitDefender Antivirus 2010 review

    BitDefender Antivirus 2010

BitDefender Antivirus 2010 holds its own at dealing with malware, but its interface isn't especially user-friendly. Overall the program earned fourth place in our roundup of stand-alone antivirus programs.

  • BitDefender Antivirus 10.0

    BitDefender Antivirus 10.0

When we reviewed BitDefender Antivirus 10.0, it did an excellent job of detecting malware. It's also easy to use and inexpensive.

  • Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 review

    Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009

The strong Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 suite may cost a little more than some competitors, but it’s easy to use and good at blocking malicious software. Updated, 16 June 2009.

  • Trend Micro Antivirus + Antispyware 2010 review

Trend Micro Antivirus + Antispyware 2010

Trend Micro Antivirus + Antispyware is good looking software weighed down by comparatively poor malware detection, slow scan speed, and a seriously misguided habit of hiding what it does from the user.
