We reviewed Destinator on an HP iPaq alongside CoPilot Live installed on a T-Mobile MDA Compact III. It’s fair to say that this made for some interesting in-car commentary when they disagreed with one another on our lengthy trek to Malvern and back to London.
Initially we got CoPilot to take us the fastest route home – boring motorway all the way and hardly a challenge. Then we tried to outfox our ultra-confident CoPilot by embarking on an unscheduled diversion. Alas, it saw us coming and promptly recalculated our route, shepherding us back on track with only a minor reprimand. However, bearing in mind that T-Mobile is selling the MDA Compact III with CoPilot as a package, we were surprised by how poorly the two worked together. Using the stylus to set up a route for CoPilot to calculate was fine and took only moments, but the T-Mobile MDA is tricky to use when driving since you really need to use the stylus to be accurate with your finger jabbing. Needless to say, this shouldn’t be encouraged while at the wheel.
Less irritating were the directions themselves, which are delivered by a lady with a less grating voice than her rival inside the Destinator. There’s a selection of male and female voices to choose from – surprisingly uncommon as a feature. Annoyingly, you get a verbal warning every few metres about the turn in a few hundred yards, but otherwise we found CoPilot a useful fellow traveller.
