CoPilot Live on T-Mobile MDA Compact III

From free to £220

Manufacturer: T-Mobile

Our Rating: We rate this 3 out of 5

We reviewed Destinator on an HP iPaq alongside CoPilot Live installed on a T-Mobile MDA Compact III. This version - the T-Mobile - was useful, but with some glitches.

We reviewed Destinator on an HP iPaq alongside CoPilot Live installed on a T-Mobile MDA Compact III. It’s fair to say that this made for some interesting in-car commentary when they disagreed with one another on our lengthy trek to Malvern and back to London.

Initially we got CoPilot to take us the fastest route home – boring motorway all the way and hardly a challenge. Then we tried to outfox our ultra-confident CoPilot by embarking on an unscheduled diversion. Alas, it saw us coming and promptly recalculated our route, shepherding us back on track with only a minor reprimand. However, bearing in mind that T-Mobile is selling the MDA Compact III with CoPilot as a package, we were surprised by how poorly the two worked together. Using the stylus to set up a route for CoPilot to calculate was fine and took only moments, but the T-Mobile MDA is tricky to use when driving since you really need to use the stylus to be accurate with your finger jabbing. Needless to say, this shouldn’t be encouraged while at the wheel.

Less irritating were the directions themselves, which are delivered by a lady with a less grating voice than her rival inside the Destinator. There’s a selection of male and female voices to choose from – surprisingly uncommon as a feature. Annoyingly, you get a verbal warning every few metres about the turn in a few hundred yards, but otherwise we found CoPilot a useful fellow traveller.

ALK's CoPilot Live is the software to choose if you've already got a fairly advanced mobile phone and want to add satnav capabilities to it.

  • CoPilot Live 7.0 mobile satnav software

CoPilot Live 7.0 mobile satnav software

Alk's CoPilot Live 7.0 software can be installed on any Windows Mobile device – pretty or not – and the chances are this device will already include many of the high-end features we expect to see in today's pricey personal navigation devices (PNDs).

  • T-Mobile Wing review

    T-Mobile Wing

We've rarely praised a mobile phone's call quality - until now. The navy-blue T-Mobile Wing sounds terrific - and as this handset is in essence a rebadged version of the much-vaunted HTC Touch, this may be good news for those who crave touchscreen mobile phone style without wanting to follow the iPhone herd.

    ALK CoPilot Live Premium app

CoPilot is a perennial favourite satnav application, and while it will set you back a few pounds it is cheaper than some.
