For those looking to edit audio on a shoestring budget, Roxio's RecordNow 9.0 Music Lab Premier is a strong option. A comprehensive suite for creating, editing and compiling digital audio, RecordNow has an enticing £20 price tag.

The Sound Editor is versatile and novices will benefit from a selection of self-explanatory palettes and tools. It can record from a variety of sources and you can add special effects to give your project extra impact. Choose between producing your own playlists and AutoMix, which finds songs matching your preferences.

Music Disc Creator allows you to compile an audio CD, MP3/WMA disc or DVD music disc by adding audio tracks, importing from CD or DVD or recording audio via a microphone. When creating a DVD music disc, the appearance of menus and track screens can be customised using smart objects and images, or by changing the background colour and repositioning menu elements.

The software features an easy-to-use LP and Tape Assistant for converting vinyl and cassettes to digital format. Tracks can then be burned or exported in MP3, WAV or WMA format. The Sound Editor's audio cleaner will remove any sound distortion. Track information is filled in automatically with the Music ID function. This ingeniously scans Yahoo Music Jukebox’s library for the track and fills in details such as album name and genre in the audio tags.

In addition to more advanced audio-editing features and support for popular audio formats, the software includes fun elements, such as the ability to create mobile ringtones.
