A decade ago, life was much simpler – the only threat to PC security came from viruses. Today, the situation is very different. A mere antivirus program is nowhere near sufficient. PC-cillin provides protection from viruses, spyware, spam and phishing. You get a firewall, WLAN intruder-monitoring and a console that lets you manage security across a home network, too.

Installation is a lengthy process. A 20-digit product key authenticates the installation, but this isn’t enough. To access updates you’ll need to register and provide personal details. However, you can install PC-cillin on three PCs, thus reducing its price tag to a more reasonable £14 or so per PC.

It's a good idea to avail yourself of Trend Micro’s Software Rating Database service – a list of 'safe' applications. This saves time over confirming access for programs.

The Web Site Filtering service updates your software with 'safe' sites for transferring information and content. And PC-cillin will warn if any Windows or Office updates need to be applied. The firewall allows you to define different settings for your profiles, making it easy to switch between various access preferences.

We installed PC-cillin on an old laptop to judge its impact on system overheads. It has a significant system footprint, adding considerably to boot time and noticeably reducing responsiveness. Virus and spyware scanning is slow, mainly because these are treated as separate tasks.

A well-specified and highly configurable security bundle that is perhaps a better match for small office networks than domestic use. While it is good value, it’s also a resource hog. Older PCs will groan under the strain.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14.0

The core bundle of PC-cillin Internet Security 14.0 remains the same as last year's version – antivirus, antispam and firewall – but you get some extra protection against phishing and spyware, privacy and parental controls, Wi-Fi intrusion detection and centralised management.

  • F-Secure Internet Security 2005

While it's been on the antivirus scene for a long time, F-Secure has been much less visible than alternatives such as Norton and McAfee. Much of this was due to the fact that its scanning software tended to be used at the corporate level.

    Trend Micro Internet Security Pro

Autumn doesn't merely bring mist and mellow fruitfulness – it just as surely comes accompanied by a rash of antivirus software releases. Trend Micro's Internet Security Pro is the latest suite to hit the market, and this release, which drops the 'PC-Cillin' tag, brings with it an exhaustive feature list.

    TrendMicro Antivirus plus Anti-Spyware 2007

Trend Micro's low score was primarily decided by its lacklustre performance at detecting malware samples. The program missed almost one in five samples, for an entirely disappointing catch rate of 82 percent.

We weren’t impressed by Trend Micro Internet Security 2008’s malware-fighting, but its decent features and price put it in fifth place in our round-up.
