Webroot Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus 5.2

£29.99 for a single user

Manufacturer: Webroot

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus 5.2 protects against the two most common online dangers.

Webroot provides a number of internet security programs, but Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus 5.2 protects against the two most common online dangers.

The virtue of Spy Sweeper is that it's extremely simple to use. The program will scan your computer during installation to unearth any spyware or viruses that are set to damage files, steal personal information or inhibit performance.

A Quick Sweep option allows rapid checks without tying up system resources. Meanwhile, Full Sweep examines every file on your system and Smart Shields protects from system changes via ActiveX controls or other browser threats.

The antivirus engine is provided by Sophos, which means you are guaranteed an extremely high level of protection. Definitions for the latest spyware and viruses are downloaded daily, while the use of Flex Defs (flexible definitions) means that malicious code can be removed even if it hasn't yet been fully identified.

One common feature that's found across most recent antivirus packages is the ability to remove rootkits. Rootkits are programs that exploit Windows' vulnerabilities while remaining hidden from the previous generations of security software.

While most users would probably prefer to obtain all security provisions in one package, the good thing about Spy Sweeper is that you can install the product on up to three PCs.

  • Overall: We give this item 8 of 10 overall

In a market awash with security programs, Webroot's application is decent but has little to recommend it above any other antivirus tool. It's extremely easy to use, but its main advantage is the generous licence agreement. Even here, however, we would recommend Panda's Titanium software as a better buy if you want to protect all your household computers.
