Comodo IceDragon 20 review: a Firefox-based web browser focused on security

Free

Manufacturer: Comodo

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Comodo's IceDragon is a free web browser that focuses on security - hardly suprising given that Comodo is primarily a security company. Here's our Comodo IceDragon review.

Comodo has an excellent range of free software and - as might be expected from a security company - most of them are designed to make your PC safer in some way.

IceDragon is Firefox wrapped in a new skin with some tweaks and extra features to make it better and more secure. Firefox 19 was in the IceDragon we downloaded, but Firefox 20 has only been out for a few days, so it's forgivable that it's not quite the latest version. There's also a browser called Dragon. It's the same as IceDragon except that it's based on Google Chrome for those that prefer it.

One of the nice features about IceDragon is that it uses Comodo's DNS servers. These are used when converting URLs to IP addresses. All browsers use DNS servers, but these are typically your ISP's servers. Comodo claims its DNS servers are faster and more secure. They filter out phishing, spyware and malware websites, parked domains with adverts and so on. Of course, you can use Comodo's DNS servers with any browser, so it’s not an exclusive feature.

IceDragon has an option to switch to virtual browsing mode. This runs the browser in a virtual environment that is completely isolated from the rest of the system, so even if you visit a website with malware, it can't infect your computer. However, virtual mode requires Comodo Internet Security. There's a free version, but you might not want to replace your current security software.

Other security features include the ability to scan a web page and view a report that shows whether it is safe or known to engage in phishing, malware and so on. Crash reports and performance reports are not sent back to developers and there are a few other under-the-hood security tweaks too.

In all other respects, this is simply the latest version of Firefox and if you are a fan of Mozilla's browser, you'll feel right at home. It has the same features, menus, extensions and add-ons. It's just more secure.

Comodo IceDragon: Bottom line

Comodo IceDragon is one we highly recommended if security is important and Chrome enthusiasts are equally well served by Comodo Dragon, which adds similar security features to Google's browser.
