HotUKDeals app review

FREE

Manufacturer: HotUKDeals

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Offering access to the best deals in the UK, as chosen by other bargain hunters, HotUKDeals has released an app for Android and iPhone. Here's our HotUKDeals app review.

The official and free HotUKDeals.com app brings access to 'deals, voucher codes, freebies and savings' on iPhone, iPad and Android smartphone or Android tablet. We tested HotUKDeals' Android app and iPhone app on Nexus 7 and iPhone 5See also: Best Android apps and Best iPad and iPhone apps.

HotUKDeals is a popular web-based service that combines social-networking with the never-ending hunt for a bargain. Members submit deals, voucher codes and bargains for the scrutiny of their peers. Sign up and you can keep track of the hottest deals on all manner of products. According to HotUKDeals more 600,000 members contribute to the none promoted deals published therein. The service also claims that listed are 'up to date, member shared voucher codes from trusted retailers like Asda, Dominos Pizza, Tesco, Sainsburys, Argos, Zavvi, and more' - our experience didn't always entirely match this boast.

Using HotUKDeals app

The HotUKDeals app is extremely simple to use. Open up the app and you get a list of 'This Week's Hottest Deals'. This isn't as useful as it could be as it comprises only a list of the most popular deals in all areas of the UK. When we opened it this included lipsticks, skinny jeans and out of data Advent calendars. These may be of interest to you, but we are less than fussed. To get the most out of HotUKDeals it pays to offer up your location, and to sign in. This is a straightforward process - you can sign in via Facebook or Twitter from the 'Submit' button, and you'll be prompted to offer your location either manually or via your device's GPS capability.

Even less hassle, and a great quick way to filter deals, is to tap the pull-down tab at the top of each home screen. This offers a choice of 'Hot' 'New' and 'Disc.'. Hot is the currently trending offers, New is, well, new ones, and Discussed is those offers that are getting the most conversation. You can further filter by type (deals, vouchers, competitions etc). And - what may be of principal interest to PC Advisor readers - you can filter by topic. These include 'Computers', 'Audiovisual' and 'Mobile'. Right up our street.

HotUKDeals appOnce you've found an offer, click into it and you get a detailed description and images. The deals are moderated, and - in principle at least - from major retailers, so you should be on safe ground. But we found plenty of dodgy looking listings from individuals trying to sell things and, as ever, it pays to keep your wits about you.

At the top of the page, above the 'temperature' guages, are icons offering you the option to comment on the deal, share it or - where possible - take things further. Click the 'Go to Deal' icon and you should be delivered to the website of the deal. However we often found that this simply took us to the homepage of the retailer involved. Not so useful. In fairness, we suspect that HotUKDeals is at the mercy of its members in this regard - they post the deals, after all. And you can, of course, rate deals: helping to improve things for everyone.
