Adobe InDesign CS6 review

£262.80

Manufacturer: Adobe

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

One noticeable difference to the new version of InDesign is that unlike Illustrator and Photoshop, InDesign does not have the new darkened interface and retains the same black on white look that we all know well.

There seems to be little reasoning behind this beyond Adobe having the concentrate on other improvements, and InDesign CS6 does however contain a number of major new features – notably the new Liquid Layout option and Content Collector tool. See also Group test: what's the best desktop publishing software?

The Liquid Layout feature gives you the option to adapt your layouts for different sizes of print or interactive media. It’s a very flexible system – as appropriate for turning A4 brochures into A5 (or even a bilboard or postcard) as quickly laying out both portrait and landscape versions of a digital magazine destined for DPS. Visit Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 review.

Using Liquid Layouts to its full potential requires creating page rules that dictate how page elements move and change as different page aspect ratio affect them. This can be time-consuming and the results will usually still need manual tweaking. However, if you’re working on a project that needs a lot of re-layout – whether a new project or reworking an old one – this could be a major timesaver.

The Content Collector is a new tool introduced for InDesign CS6. A pop up ‘conveyer’ that appears at the bottom of the screen, it allows the user to grab multiple pieces of content and repurpose throughout the same or separate documents using the Content Collector tool.

You can repurpose single or multiple pieces of content simply by dragging the content out of the conveyer whilst choosing to keep or remove them from the conveyer. It’s a fast way to replicate pieces of copy and graphics across multiple layouts and documents.

Other new features include Articles, Folio Builder and Corner Options. Corner Options allows you to manually adapt both the corner size and shape to Bevel, Inset, Inverse Rounded and Rounded. Very handy for web mockupd.

With these new features and tools and the New Document intent option for Digital Publishing, which allows the user to set up your document for iPhone, iPad, Fire and Xoom, it would seem that the new InDesign Creative Suite is definitely taking a big step into the realm of digital and it’s all the better for it.
