AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free review

Free

Manufacturer: AVG

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free is an Android app to protect mobile phones from malware, with middling results.

AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free is from the makers of the Windows security programs, so we had high hopes for AVG’s Android app from the same stable.

Things started off well. As soon as AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free is set up, a large lozenge appears onscreen. You're urged to tap this to initiate a scan. See also: Group test: what's the best Android antivirus?

This apparently checks installed apps and external media, but we were sceptical given that the whole process took under 30 seconds.

It did, however, highlight the fact that we'd earlier changed a setting to allow the installation of apps from non-Android Market sources - a recognised security threat, even if Google’s own hosted apps are not guaranteed malware-free. See also: Group test: what's the best Android antivirus?

AVG Antivirus Free performed fairly well in AV-Test's comparative anti-malware tests.

AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free was placed in the second group of apps that miss upwards of 35% of malware that they scan. It missed Opfake - a Trojan that disguises itself as an update to the Opera web browser that usually leads to premium-rate SMS call scams.

Otherwise, detection performance from AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free was average, picking up 90% or more of threats in eight of the 19 families of malware.
