Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile review

Free

Manufacturer: Webroot

Our Rating: We rate this 2.5 out of 5

Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile is an Android app to protect the vulnerable platform from malware. In lab tests, it had limited malware detection, and in some malware categories its detection was below 40%.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile did not give a great account of itself in AV-Test’s malware detection tests. This was largely down to the patchiness of its threat-scanning engine.

In nine of the 19 malware categories that AV-Test used, Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile struck gold, detecting at least 90 percent of the suspect files.

But in three categories it picked up almost no suspicious content, putting Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile well down in the pack.

The interface wasn’t our favourite either, with annoying messages about easily fixed items listed as needing our attention and putting us at risk. We thought it unlikely we’d need to prioritise setting up remote data wiping in case we lost the device, before we’d even scanned for malware.

Clicking on the nearly hidden Security tab at the bottom of the screen, we found out there were no current security issues. We could optionally set up secure web browsing. This would have been much more helpful on the main screen. See also: Group test: what's the best Android antivirus?

The anti-virus scanner is efficient enough (which refers only to phones and not tablets). It includes a scheduler which we would have preferred to have found more easily.

On the smartphone version, there’s a slightly clearer interface and the option to filter calls and texts.

A paid-for version costs $19.99 per year, and adds remote wiping, SIM card lock, settings audit and app inspector.
