G Data MobileSecurity review

£9.99 per year

Manufacturer: G DATA

Our Rating: We rate this 2 out of 5

G Data has specialised in Windows security, although its Android anti-virus offering leaves a lot to be desired.

How the mighty have fallen. G Data has previously won PC Advisor’s Best Buy award for its Windows anti-virus software, so finding it in the lowest category for its Android protection was a surprise.

In seven of AV-Test's 19 tests it allowed through more malware than it blocked, and two trojans – Jifake and Rooter – weren’t detected at all. G Data has much ground to make up if it wants to make future tests.  See also: Group test: what's the best Android antivirus?

That it scanned through just 97 applications on our Android 4.0 smartphone – devoting a scant 10 seconds to the task – was hardly impressive. On our Android 3.x tablet it was a similar story: 131 apps checked in 8 seconds.

G Data’s other party trick is to tell you about the permissions you’ve granted other apps to look through an Android device and which apps these are.

This is useful, but it doesn’t make MobileSecurity the most compelling of apps. G Data MobileSecurity costs £10 per year.

  • Overall: We give this item 4 of 10 overall

Given G-Data’s reputation as a quality desktop security software vendor, we’re worried that consumers will assume the same of its Android app. Unfortunately, AV-Test found this to be very far from the case.

  • Vipre Mobile Security Beta review

    Vipre Mobile Security Beta

Vipre finds itself in the same boat as Trend Micro. It put in a reasonably consistent malware-detection performance, but a few too many so-so results left it trailing the pack of familiar-name security software brands.
