Skype 3 for iPhone review

Manufacturer: Skype

Our Rating: We rate this 4.5 out of 5

Skype 3 offers an easier, cleverer way for iPhone users to make video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G.

Skype 3 offers an easier, cleverer way for iPhone users to make video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G.

The ability to make and take video calls on your Apple iPhone 4 or third-generation iPod touch is fantastic news for all kinds of reasons: from being able to see as well as hear long-distance relatives, to taking part in video conferences.

Apple's FaceTime enables you to do these things - but only if the person you're calling also has an iOS device or Mac with FaceTime installed. Skype's larger use base potentially enables you to reach millions more, and you can also make video calls over 3G. Handy for those times when Wi-Fi isn't available.

The Skype 3 for iPhone app is easy to use. There are five tabs along the bottom that give you access to your Contacts, Chats, Calls, History and My Info. Selecting a contact pulls up a submenu that enables you to see their details, with four calling options - Call, Video Call, Chat and SMS.

Over Wi-Fi, video calling is pretty slick. Depending on the speed of your connection, you get to see your contact chatting away almost in real time, with their view of you popping up in the bottom left corner.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3 or later
  • Overall: We give this item 9 of 10 overall

Skype 3 for iPhone is an impressive update. Making a call over 3G is great to have as an option, but can result in lower call quality. A one-minute video call can also use 2 to 3MB of your monthly data allowance, so you may not want to make video calls too often via 3G.
