Veterans of Microsoft Office will already be familiar with OrgPlus. The software giant licensed earlier versions of the program to add organisational chart-making capabilities to its flagship office suite.
These days, OrgPlus pretty much has the organisational-chart market wrapped up. The reason for this is that, while it may look like a simple drawing tool, it's actually much more. Plenty of people might make do with Visio or PowerPoint for these tasks, but because of its specialisation, OrgPlus is much easier to use.
OrgPlus's database structure simplifies queries and the import and export of HR data. The program can now hold multiple charts within a single project – a bit like the Excel workbook/worksheet concept. New to this particular release are freeform layouts, the ability to consolidate charts and improved calculation formulae.
You can enter staff data manually or import it with just a few clicks from a range of document formats. Several pre-defined templates are available to spice up the appearance of your chart and, as before, finished documents can be directly published to PowerPoint presentations, as a Word document or to a website.
While you do might need some artistic skill to do the same job in, say, PowerPoint, OrgPlus makes it simple enough to produce snappy-looking charts, featuring web links and imported pictures. And, thanks to its database foundation, OrgPlus can easily handle numerical data, such as salaries and budgets.
