Tweetie 2 review

£1.79 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Atebits

Our Rating: We rate this 4.5 out of 5

When developer Loren Brichter announced that Tweetie 2 would be a new app - and so a brand new purchase even for those who already owned Tweetie - he had a genius solution to the inevitable uproar. He made Tweetie 2 awesome.

It's tough to complain about spending £1.79 when, in return, you score an app that's a delight to use. Tweetie 2 refines what worked in Tweetie, and addresses areas where competitors outshone it. Even better, the app adds some smart new functionality that's sure to be emulated by the its peers.

Unchanged in Tweetie 2 is the smooth scrolling through your timeline. One clever new thing is how Tweetie 2 refreshes your tweets: scroll to the top of the list, pull down the top edge for a moment, and new tweets start loading. Swiping over tweets in your timeline shows shortcuts to key actions, like replying and retweeting. Still, we long for the day when the desktop and iPhone versions sync, so we don't have to scroll through tweets we've already read.

The writing process gets a makeover in Tweetie 2. Tapping the character countdown widget reveals six buttons, with quick access to key features. The buttons for the iPhone's camera and your photo album let you drop in photos, and you can geotag your tweets.

An address book makes for easier mentions (you can type your friends' real names rather than their Twitter monikers), and there's a recent hashtag browser, and a URL shrinker. There is also support for Twitter's new retweet flow and support for Twitter Lists.
