Corel Digital Studio 2010 review

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Corel has combined its video and photo editing software into a single lightweight version called Corel Digital Studio 2010

Corel has combined its video and photo editing software into a single lightweight version called Corel Digital Studio 2010

Corel's Paint Shop Pro and VideoStudio Pro provide powerful tools for photo-editing and video-editing work, but at around £80 each they're fairly expensive and many people simply don't require the full range of tools included in those programs. Corel has now provided a cheaper alternative, by simplifying both programs and bringing them together in its new Digital Studio suite.

The suite comprises the new Corel PaintShop Photo Express and Corel VideoStudio Express. They don't provide the same range of editing features as their ‘Pro' counterparts, but they're very easy to use and provide an affordable all-in-one suite for working with digital photos and video.

And, for good measure, Corel also throws in a copy of DVD Factory Express for burning your projects onto DVD, along with WinDVD (one of the better DVD players for Windows).

To keep things simple for new users, Corel PaintShop Photo Express and Corel VideoStudio Express have almost identical interfaces, which means that you don't have to spend time learning how to master two different sets of tools for working with photos and videos.

Digital photography tips and camera reviews

When you launch either program you are initially presented with the Media Organiser, which provides simple features for browsing and organising your collection of photos and video clips, and for uploading files to web sites such as YouTube and Flickr.

To edit a photo or video clip in Corel Digital Studio 2010 you simply double-click on it to open up the program's ‘Easy Edit' window. This allows you to perform basic editing tasks, such as removing red eye from a photo, or trimming a video clip down to the correct length. However, the Easy Edit window in both programs also includes a ‘More Tools' palette that can be opened up to reveal more advanced editing tools.

Corel PaintShop Photo Express is a little disappointing here - it does provide tools for correcting lighting and colour balance, and a ‘makeover' option for removing skin blemishes from photos. However, its range of special effects and artistic tools is very limited and doesn't provide much scope for doing anything really creative with your photos.

Corel VideoStudio Express fares better, with a ‘Create Movie' option that allows you to quickly edit together multiple video clips, and add transitions, title text and music files to create a complete movie project.

Windows XP/Vista/7
1.8GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB available storage
  • Ease of Use: We give this item 8 of 10 for ease of use
  • Features: We give this item 6 of 10 for features
  • Value for Money: We give this item 7 of 10 for value for money
  • Overall: We give this item 7 of 10 overall

The limited range of editing tools in Corel Digital Studio 2010 means that more experienced photographers and video buffs will probably prefer the ‘Pro’ versions of PaintShop and VideoStudio, or perhaps rivals such as Adobe’s Elements suite. However, its low cost and admirable ease of use make Corel Digital Studio 2010 a good choice for beginners who just want to quickly tweak their photos and videos before uploading them to the internet.
