There are plenty of programs available that promise to protect your PC against the terrible things that could happen to it - viruses, Trojans, hacking, spyware and the rest. It can be difficult to know just how effective such protection is.
Some companies have stronger reputations than others in this field, and you'd have to say that Computer Associates, creator of eTrust Internet Security Suite, has a good name in the world of PC security.
The advantage of choosing a security product from a big-name vendor is that you know it will have the resources to respond to fresh threats - and you hear about new viruses on a weekly basis these days. Such companies can update your package to protect your PC, often so quickly you won't even notice.
Here at PC Advisor we've always advocated buying a decent antivirus package, and EZ Antivirus, part of the suite, is one of the best we've seen. Simple to install and use, the scan lets you know exactly what is going on and then advises you about dealing with anything it finds on your system.
EZ Firewall offers good protection from hackers - of course, Windows XP offers firewall protection anyway, but this is simpler to configure and much more difficult to get around.
Antispyware packages are also a must these days, and PestPatrol works well and unobtrusively. The Anti-Spam package, however, is probably overkill unless you find unsolicited email a particular problem.
