Lookout’s malware scanner automatically checks each and every program you install, and additionally checks through all the apps on your device weekly. Updates are delivered automatically too, after you select the ‘Enable Security’ option at the bottom of the page. See also Top ten Android apps.
Backups of contacts (plus photos and files in the Premium version) are saved to and restored from mylookout.com, so you’ll need to create an account for this. Conveniently, the Google account used for your Android device can be used here. From the mylookout account you can locate your phone or tablet or set off an alarm if it gets stolen. We tried to test this function on several Android devices but couldn't get it to work. The service has potential though: we tried the iOS version on an iPad, which Lookout eventually located and emailed us its approximate location on a map.
More impressively, Lookout backed up our contacts and settings in a trice. As soon as we’d logged in to mylookout.com on both our tablet our laptop, everything was synched and accessible. Impressive.
Protection-wise, Lookout was rated as one of the most proficient apps. It scored above 90 percent in almost every category, only failing to identify the SerBG Trojan family and showing weaknesses. A reassuring system tray icon at the bottom of the screen informs you whether all is okay, echoed by status indicators and informative updates both within the app and via the web console.
In the Settings menu is an option to add Lookout as an administrator. This is required if you want Lookout to be able to erase all data stored on your device if it’s stolen. After performing a factory reset it can lock the screen and change the unlock password. Hidden here is a clever option to insist on encrypting application data.
