Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 review

20 euros (1 PC, 1 year); 31 euros (3 PCs, 1 year)

Manufacturer: Avira

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 does a great job of detecting and blocking malware, but its interface needs some improvement.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 does a great job of detecting and blocking malware, but its interface needs some improvement. The free Personal and paid-for Premium versions differ primarily in their features rather than protection. We review the Premium version here.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011's interface is reasonably straightforward, but some areas need improvement. The Status tab gives a basic overview of whether you’re protected and your virus signatures are up to date, although it doesn’t offer much detail. Barely any buttons are labelled, and the icons aren’t always immediately recognisable.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 is a German import, and some of the wording in the dialog boxes feels awkwardly translated. We also feel that this program is geared towards more advanced PC users.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 posted very good scores for malware detection, picking up 99 percent of samples in our scanner-based detection tests. This was one of the better showings in this test. In the blocking of real-world malware attacks, AntiVir completely blocked 80 percent of attacks. It partially blocked a further 4 percent of attacks.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011 also put up decent scores for malware cleanup. It detected all infections on the test system, and was successful in removing all active components of an attack 80 percent of the time, and removing all malware components 50 percent of the time.

However, Avira AntiVir Premium 2011's AV engine flagged six false positives. If you were hoping to use the free Personal version, but want a product that doesn’t flag safe files, try the free version of Avast - the only free product that didn’t encounter false positives in our tests.

AntiVir Premium’s scan speeds are impressive: it completed an on-demand scan of 4.5GB of data in 1 minute, 36 seconds. Avira’s on-access scans were also fast at 4 mins, 7 secs. On-access scan time is a good indicator of how quickly an AV program will be able to scan files for malware as they’re opened or saved to disk.

Avira AntiVir Premium 2011's impact on overall system performance is low, adding a mere 2.5 secs to system startup in our tests.
