Dell C3765dnf review

£839 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Dell

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

If you're operating a medium or large size company, consider the Dell C3765dnf for a sturdy multifunction colour laser printer where speed of production is a high priority.

Although it weighs a chunky 33kg out of the box, the Dell C3765dnf nevertheless measures a relatively compact 558 x 439 x 530mm. Styled entirely in chic black, the only burst of colour is supplied by the 4.3in colour LCD touch display which juts out below the scanner cover. Read more colour laser printer reviews.

Colours on the display are bright and clear and the Home page includes Fax to E-mail and ID Card Copy instructions, together with separate menus for copy, fax, print and scan modes. Beside the LCD is a standard number pad plus two useful buttons for Job Status and Power Saver, while below is a USB port for flash drives. From this you can print PDF, JPEG and TIFF files.

There are plenty of other print options with the Dell C3765dnf, beginning with a 50-sheet Duplex Automatic Document Feeder on the top, a 150-sheet Multipurpose Feeder hidden behind the drop-down panel in front and a 550-sheet paper tray at the bottom (a further optional second tray can be added).

Round the back of the machine are connectors for phone and wall jack, a USB port and ethernet port - there's a further input for Wi-Fi connection but you'll need to buy Dell's Wireless Adaptor plus hard drive kit (an extra £177) in order to link up with your router.

Dell C3765dnf: Performance

Now it's rare for manufacturers' claimed print speeds to be consistently accurate but Dell's estimates of 35ppm on average for both black text and colour documents proved to be spot on in our tests.

The same was true for duplex prints which were hurtling out at the specified 23ppm. Print quality with the Dell C3765dnf was exceptionally high in mono although colour prints had a distinctly reddish hue.

The four toner cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) which slide easily in from the front come in three yield sizes - Standard (3000 pages each at £49 black, and £96 for each colour), High Capacity (7000 Black £79; 5000 each colour £128) and Extra High Capacity (11,000 Black £92, 9000 each colour £160).

So print costs are impressively low with high yield - however the base cost of the C3765dnf is considerably more than, say, the HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dw we reviewed recently.

The Xerox Phaser 6128MFP colour laser multifunction printer could be a good choice for low-volume users who have exacting colour needs. It sells for a nice, low price and produces high-quality output - but it does so slowly, and at a high consumables cost.
