Epson Stylus SX525WD Review

£75 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Epson

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

As the name suggests, the SX525WD is the next step up from the SX425W, and it provides essentially the same set of features – the only major difference being the addition of double-sided printing.

The SX525WD wouldn’t normally fit into the ‘low cost’ category, but a recent price cut brought it right down from £149 to £75. As the name suggests, the SX525WD is the next step up from the SX425W, and it provides essentially the same set of features – the only major difference being the addition of double-sided printing. However, it’s a lot faster than its less expensive stablemate and also offers more competitive running costs.

The SX525WD isn’t the most attractive printer we’ve ever seen – it’s little more than a big rectangular lump of plastic. However, it provides all the features you’re likely to need from a printer, including printing, scanning and copying. Importantly, it also offers Wi-Fi connectivity so you can share it with other people on your home network.

Like the SX425W, this model provides extremely good quality for text, graphics and photo output. Its text quality is close to that of a laser printer, and the speed at which it churns out text documents actually took us by surprise, coming in at an impressive 15 pages per minute. That’s nowhere near Epson’s claimed 35ppm, but it still puts it right at the front of this group. And, thankfully, the SX525WD was a lot quieter than the SX425W while it was churning out those pages at high speed.

Colour printing speeds were something of a mixed bag. The SX525WD printed our mixed text and graphics document at a modest 4ppm, but then speeded up again for pure photo output, turning out a 4x6in postcard print in just 50 seconds. Photo quality was good again, with the same subtle skin tones and bright, detailed images as the SX425WD. (If you’re a keen photographer then you might want to consider one of Epson’s Stylus Photo printers, which use no less than six coloured inks for photo printing – although that inevitably increases printing costs.)

The other key difference between the two Epson models is that the SX525WD uses larger ink cartridges, which produce a higher page yield. That helps to bring its printing costs down to more affordable levels – about 3p per page for black and white, and a more competitive 10p per page for colour. The SX525WD can also use even larger ‘XL’ cartridges, which will help to further reduce printing costs. Epson also sells a multipack that contains the three coloured inks – cyan, magenta, and yellow – and is cheaper than having to buy them separately.

If you’re happy to choose a model in the upper price bracket of this group, the Epson Stylus 525 is a great choice. Its price tag is offset by the inclusion of duplex printing and Wi-Fi and by the much faster performance than its peers. Running costs are modest and print quality high.
