The HP Photosmart Premium e-All-In-One is a multifunction inkjet printer.
An earlier version of the Photosmart Premium won Editor's Choice in a Macworld printer group test last year, and this latest model is another impressive addition to the range.
Like its predecessor, the HP Photosmart Premium e-All-In-One is a multifunction printer that provides 600x600dpi resolution for black-and-white printing, and 9600x2400dpi for colour, along with a built-in scanner for scanning and copying documents. It's rated at 33 pages per minute (ppm) for black-and-white printing and 32ppm for colour, although actual print speeds were closer to 10ppm and 6ppm when we tested it via the Photosmart's WiFi connection on our office network.
Even so, those print speeds are pretty good, and should be enough for most home and small business users. Print quality is also very good, producing sharp, detailed photo prints with strong colours and attractive fleshtones. Our only complaint is about HP's manual, which we didn't find very helpful and didn't clearly explain whether to set up the wireless connection using the touchscreen controls or the software on the CD.
The feature that really interested us was the Photosmart's support for Apple's AirPrint technology. As long as your iPhone or iPad is on the same wireless network as the Photosmart you can print documents from any app that works with AirPrint. That includes the standard Photos app and Safari, as well as other apps such as Pages. AirPrint is entirely automatic, so the only settings you need to worry about are the number of copies you want to print or whether to select the Photosmart's double-sided printing option.
When you're away from home you can also print documents over the internet by using HP's ePrint feature, which gives the printer its own private email address and allows you to print documents simply by emailing them to the printer.
