Samsung NX1000 review

£599.99 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Samsung

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

The Samsung NX1000 is a new wireless Compact System Camera with a DSLR-sized 20MP sensor. Read our review to find out more.

The arctic white finish of our Samsung NX1000 review sample indicates that Samsung is targeting the fashion conscious with this entry model in its NX range of compact interchangeable lens cameras. See Group test: what's the best compact camera?

Wireless connectivity furthers the impression that it is in part targeted at slaves to social media. But the exterior belies a serious interior, incorporating an APS-C format image sensor, as found in physically larger digital SLRs. Take a look at the Nikon AW100 review too.

Could we finally be moving towards true DSLR quality from a camera that, even with 20-50mm zoom attached for £599.99 all-in, can be squeezed into a jacket pocket? See also Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30 review.

Rival Sony has arguably hit an image quality/size ratio peak already with its slightly chunkier NEX-7, also featuring a same format, same resolution chip. But at half the price, Samsung’s NX1000 could be considered a remarkably effective budget alternative, if you’re not bothered about its lack of eye-level viewfinder and can ‘make do’ with a fixed 3-inch back plate LCD for stills and video composition and review. Naturally the Samsung offers 1920x1080 pixels recording, commenced with the press of a small red button at the rear. We get stereo sound too, and quality is sufficient that any amateur videographer will not be disappointed.

Straight out of the box, the NX1000 body feels surprisingly light when held in the palm, which has its pluses and minuses. Adding the lens helps provide a more reassuring solidity, plus a steadier hold, avoiding blur when shooting handheld. Wireless connectivity aside, the lens itself is another USP, in that a press of the ‘iFunction’ button located on its barrel and a subsequent twist of the lens ring allows key camera functions to be altered without having to drill into more comprehensive menu lists.

    Samsung NX100

The Samsung NX100 sits above the NX10 in Samsung's interchangeable lens camera line up and while it offers the same great image quality as the NX10, the NX100 lacks the built-in features that made the NX10 a five-star product. However, the NX100 digital camera does bring something new to the table: the i-Function lens.
