StudioLine Photo 2.5

£35 inc VAT

Manufacturer: H&M Software

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

StudioLine Photo 2.5 has been updated to offer better image management, archiving, editing and sharing. It does much the same job as ACDSee 7.0 (to be reviewed next month), but in a more user-friendly fashion since it's aimed at home users.

A wealth of tips bombard you when you first open up the software or any new task within it. These can be switched off, but in fact we found many were useful for first-time users. This is fortunate as the tutorials that come with StudioLine are uninviting, text-heavy PDFs.

It is easy to use, with a clear interface based on the familiar Windows design, and plenty of simple drag-and-drop operations. This makes it a cinch to add new photos to the archive or put classification tags on them, for example Accessing tasks is also intuitive - a toolbar that takes you directly to all the core functions remains onscreen throughout. Switching between the different views works in much the same way, just click on one of the buttons in the lefthand corner and you can see the folder or timeline view, or open up the Image Toolbox to edit your photos.

Searching for images is a breeze - you can add ratings and keywords to images and use the filtered image archive to view pictures that meet your criteria. A timeline feature automatically sorts images by date.
For professional photographers StudioLine supports the RAW format and allows you to view and edit IPTC and Exif descriptions. This version also adds a live histogram for more refined image editing.

Video-editing used to be the exclusive preserve of chaps called Colin, who sported wispy beards and velvet jackets whilst operating analogue editing machines. One of the many benefits of the digital media revolution is that anyone with a camcorder and a PC can make movies. And with software as good as Studio 10.0 and Studio Plus 10.0, there's no excuse for shoddy results.
