Epson Stylus Photo RX620

£199 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Epson

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Epson’s new high-end RX620 redefines the term multifunction device. For once, it’s the scanning component that takes centre stage. With a gloriously detailed top resolution of 2,400x4,800, the RX620 picks up on the smallest details, while the built-in transparency unit gives it full negative and slide facilities.

Epson’s software bundle includes all the tools you need to breathe life back into faded or damaged photos. You also get superlative scan times, coming close to matching the best the dedicated scanner world has to offer.

That’s not to say that the Photo RX620 doesn’t measure up as a printer. It has been designed primarily for use with photos and graphics, though, and for everyday applications you can certainly find better alternatives.

The RX620’s biggest flaw is its finicky paper feeding mechanism - meaning crooked prints and paper jams are frequent. We did find it worked reasonably well once we had got the hang of it, but at this price you have a right to expect an easier ride.

Also, print times aren’t perhaps as sizzling as we might expect - to get good quality, you should expect speeds of 2.5ppm and 1.8ppm for black and colour respectively. However, the quality at this level is pretty strong and, for colour graphics in particular, the Photo RX620 competes comfortably with similarly priced photo printers.

This being a photo printer, you get plenty of additional features. The PictBridge support and versatile memory drive are helpful additions, and the large 2.4in LCD screen makes it easy to access the Epson’s many facilities without having to be connected to a computer.

The RX620 is fairly expensive. It’s not as fast as you’d expect and the paper feeding is more erratic than we’d like. Colour output is fantastic, however, and scanning is excellent - a real rarity among MFDs. Add the raft of extra features, and graphics and digital camera enthusiasts will quickly forgive the RX620 its shortcomings.
