IRISPen Executive

£136 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Computers Unlimited

Our Rating: We rate this 3 out of 5

The IRISPen is a portable scanner and OCR software bundle that allows you to scan and recognise text on the move.

The IRISPen is a portable scanner and OCR software bundle that allows you to scan and recognise text on the move. It is a small device, which you plug into your PC and then run along lines of text. It transfers text directly to your system.

Because it is designed for use on short, clear text documents, results are impressively accurate – although you'll need to use a steady hand. Wobbling leads to poor results. The Executive version we reviewed includes a text-to-speech engine that will read back text to you, as well as barcode recognition and hand-printed number recognition.

The IRISPen offers multiline scanning to remember a few lines at a time, so you can send paragraphs of text to your PC. With a light and ergonomic design it was comfortable to use.

The IRISPen Executive is an expensive, niche tool, but if you need a handheld scanner then it's the most versatile option on the market.

Rather than bringing together a range of skills, ReadIRIS Pro focuses on OCR. And it does the job rather well.

  • IrisPen Translator Executive

The IrisPen is, on the face of it, a nifty tool. Rather then laboriously type or scrawl notes from the printed page, you simply swipe the handheld scanner across the text and it's imported to the app of your choice. You can scan words in seven languages and they'll magically transform into English before you can say allez vite! In theory, anyway.

Dragon Notes - speak your sticky notes

Dragon Notes is marginally useful on its own, and is mainly helpful as a tech demo for Nuance's speech recognition technology. Here's our Dragon Notes review.

    Iogear Mobile Digital Scribe

Many note takers today must lug a laptop everywhere or write everything down by hand and then manually enter their notes into a computer. The Iogear Mobile Digital Scribe is an innovative alternative: an ink pen with a digital component.
