iPhone battery life is a constant annoyance, especially for app power users. There are various battery-life extenders available, including external power bricks and special cases that also include a backup battery for the iPhone.
Somewhere in between is the £60 Pop’n, which isn’t really an iPhone 5 battery case, more a battery that attaches to your phone (even if it’s in a case already).
Lightweight, it connects to the iPhone 5 via a Lightning connector, and attaches itself firmly to the iPhone with 24 sucker cups in a piggyback style. It’s a bit odd but it works just fine.
I don’t think it’s meant to be stuck to the iPhone for long periods of time. Instead you attach it when you need a burst of power to top up your mobile.
Powerskin claims that the 2,000mAh Pop’n can up to double iPhone 5 battery life: 6.5 hours extra talk time; 182 hours of standby; 8 hours of wi-fi, 6.5 hours of 3G duty; and 32 extra hours of music-listening time.
You charge via the included microUSB cable.
Why the funny name? It’s apparently taken from the noise it makes when you peel it off your iPhone. Mine made more of a Pslotp sound but that’s an awful name.
The Powerskin Pop’n is available in black, white, red, titanium and pink colours.
This iPhone 5 battery life extender is great if you already have a preferred case and don’t need a full battery case that encloses the phone. Alternatives – without the suckers – are Mophie’s range of lightweight power bricks.
As long as you’ve remembered to charge the extra battery and carry it around with you shouldn’t worry about that sinking Low Battery warning again.
