Lexmark X8350

£200 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Lexmark

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

MFDs are usually slanted towards the home market or the business world, but the Lexmark tries to have a foot in each camp.

This MFD attempts to offer all things to all people. Combining printer, scanner, copying and fax functions within one bulky unit, the X8350 goes further than most. MFDs are usually slanted towards the home market or the business world, but the Lexmark tries to have a foot in each camp.

The digitally minded will be more than happy: the X8350 has PictBridge support, a raft of card slots and a large colour LCD that lets you check on your shots without switching on the PC. But there's plenty to satisfy corporate users too. The fax facilities are excellent. They are lent greater weight through the inclusion of a 50-sheet ADF (automatic document feeder). You can get optional adapters to allow this MFD to work on an ethernet or wireless network.

Design is functional rather than chic. The Lexmark's casing is reasonably robust and the paper input tray is resilient – we didn't experience any paper-feed problems and can't see there being problems with reliability. Setup was a cinch, while the software is packed with features.

If you're using this MFD for high-calibre pictures, you'll probably want to invest in the special photo-colour print cartridges. Stick with the standard-colour cartridge and, even at the highest quality modes, the X8350 struggles to reproduce images in radiant colour.

Speed is decent, although you'll need to settle for 1-1.5ppm to get decent results. Text is better, with well-defined output at 2.6ppm (pages per minute). The X8350 works efficiently as a scanner, but it's not as fast as we'd like for the price - 15 and 37 seconds for an A4 scan at 100dpi and 300dpi respectively is hardly amazing.

The X8350 is a decent buy for businesses; home users looking to reproduce their photos may not find it quite as satisfying. The software is good and the feature-set is impressive, but at £200 it's perhaps a little expensive.
