ViewSonic VP2365-LED: Display technologies
Two main technologies set the ViewSonic VP2365-LED apart from a run-of-the-mill display. First of all, In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel technology delivers the best colour reproduction and widest viewing angles available. Neither of these is of essential benefit for general office use or gaming, but designers who demand accurate colour reproduction or anyone involved in editing photos or video will immediately reap the benefits of such a display.

The second key technology in use in the ViewSonic VP2365-LED is the use of an LED backlight. Now common in most types of premium LCD monitors, it's only relatively recently that this technology has been applied to high-end panels. Not only does it allow for a slimmer and lighter panel design, but it also helps cut power consumption by about half. Picture quality can also be improved thanks to better contrast ratios.
ViewSonic VP2365-LED: Physical
Unlike monitors aimed at consumers, the ViewSonic VP2365-LED's sober looks place the emphasis firmly on functionality rather than style. The screen itself is coated with a matt anti-glare coating which may look less attractive than the popular high-gloss finishes found on many consumer-grade displays; but it cuts down significantly on unwanted reflections.
The thin bezel surrounding the 23in panel lends the monitor a rather compact appearance and also helps with multi-monitor setups. It's mounted on an ergonomic stand which supports swivel, height, tilt and pivot adjustments for maximum flexibility and comfort.
ViewSonic VP2365-LED: Connectivity
Inputs include a standard analogue VGA port and a digital DVI connector. A multimedia HDMI is apparently deemed too frivolous for such a serious display. The ViewSonic VP2365-LED also lacks any built-in speakers. Instead, you get a four-port USB 2.0 hub, allowing you more convenient connections to peripherals you would usually keep on the desktop.
ViewSonic VP2365-LED: Usability
Five buttons control and configure the ViewSonic VP2365-LED display, using ViewSonic's usual, and rather dated, on-screen menu system. The power switch, being the centremost of these, is annoyingly easy to press by accident. It's illuminated by a distractingly bright blue LED – which can thankfully be turned off.
Being designed for accuracy rather than entertainment, there are no "movie", "gaming" or "text" display presets on offer. Instead, you can chose from a selection of pre-set colour temperatures, sRGB mode or make your own manual colour adjustments. You also get two ‘Eco' modes, which reduce overall brightness while saving power and increasing the lifetime of your monitor.
Applying the first Eco setting reduced overall brightness from a measured maximum of 240 cd/m2 down to 196 cd/m2, while selecting the maximum power saving dimmed the screen to 132 cd/m2. However, in so doing, power consumption was reduced from 31W down to 26W and 20W respectively.
ViewSonic VP2365-LED: Performance
When compared to a standard TN-based display, the VP2365-LED is streets ahead. Colours appear uniform across the surface of the screen and the display is bright, sharp and vivid. Our calibrator tests revealed colour reproduction to be quite accurate.
Gradients appear smooth and free of any distracting banding or artefacts. Colour reproduction is close to the sRGB standard, so it will be predictable and won't require any special consideration when matching colours, although we'd always recommend using a hardware calibrator for best results.
In a very dark room some backlight bleed is apparent from the four corners, but it's not noticeable in everyday use. The display's wide 178-degree viewing angles ensure that brightness and colours don't appear to shift as you move your head or look towards the extreme edges of the screen. It also means that the display works just as well in portrait mode, which is a sure way to make a regular TN panel's image look hideous.
Contrast was also good, using our stringent checkerboard contrast test, we measured a contrast ratio of 681:1 which is about what we'd expect from a monitor of this specification.
