The Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive  is distinguished from other products by the inclusion of a mini-USB 2.0 port, built into the drive itself on the opposite side to the usual SATA interface. While this makes copying files to or from the drive while its freestanding quite straightforward, we can’t see this facility ever being used after an initial backup to or from the rive before it’s installed inside a computer as intended.

Its build quality is less impressive than other models, with the Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive comprising a plastic shroud on top and folded steel plate below. Yet this also makes it a fairly light device at just 70g.

Also included with the Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive is Acronis True Image HD software, a Windows-only utility for cloning and partitioning drives.

Inside, the Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive uses a JMicron JMF612 controller paired with 64MB of cache.

The Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive's headline results for read speed are around 200MB per second (MBps) in HD Tach and HD Tune Pro, rising to a maximum average of 240MBps in ATTO with 8MB files.

The AS SSD test for 64 threads of 4kB files gave a very poor result, of 18MBps and 14MBps for read and write speeds of small files. Latency figures here were relatively high at 0.26ms read, and 0.21ms write. The Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive's overall rating from the same benchmark was also rather low at 131 points.

By hard-disk standards the Buffalo MicroStation Internal SSD Drive is quite quick, although it was less confident in command-queued tasks with a raft of small files. The USB port could be handy if you plan to whisk the drive in and out of your PC on a regular basis.
