The Samsung SCX-4623F continues the company's run of highly capable but affordable laser printers - this time adding fax facilities to this multifunction printer and scanner
A glowing recommendation for a Samsung printer is becoming almost a monthy event in PC Advisor's pages. Following on from the Samsung SCX-4600 comes this retooled version that adds 33.6Kb/s fax facilities (amongst other things) to the mix.
Some multifunction devices make it rather difficult for you to switch between the different features. Not the Samsung SCX-4623F. This device comes with a simple but intuitive panel of buttons that lets you slip seamlessly from one mode to another.
And while the generous sampling of number keys necessary for a good fax machine can swamp a lesser product, the Samsung SCX-4623F's interface remains pleasingly clean and uncluttered.
The general specifications are very similar to those of the Samsung SCX-4600, with the same 1200x1200dpi print and scan resolutions. Again, the robust paper tray can hold up to 250 sheets. The finished prints from the Samsung SCX-4623F are delivered from the slot in the middle of the printer, a slightly inelegant solution that, as with the Samsung SCX-4600, won't be desirable for large print jobs.
As with the other Samsungs, this Samsung SCX-4623F MFD has the Print Screen button that lets you take an almost instant snapshot of whatever you're viewing on the screen. While not a killer feature, this is a useful extra that Samsung seems to be rolling out on all its new models.
While the Samsung SCX-4623F resembles the SCX-4600 in many respects, it does have a few extras of its own. And not just with the aforementioned fax facilities, but also in the form of a convenient 40 sheet automatic feeder.
This adds extra functionality to the already fine scanning component - speeds here are very respectable, with good attention to colour.
The Samsung SCX-4623F doesn't have networking facilities. However, should you need these, an enhanced model with such features, the SCX-4623FN, is available for an extra £45.
Strangely, the Samsung SCX-4623F was a little slower in print tests than the SCX-4600, running through our tests with figures of 15.8 and 14.6 pages per minute (in Normal and Best quality respectively), rather than the scores of 17.6ppm and 16.2ppm notched up by the SCX-4600F.
This is a bit mystifying, since Samsung's official speed figures for the latter are identical to those of the Samsung SCX-4623F. Nonetheless, the difference isn't so dramatic in reality.
At its fastest, the Samsung SCX-4623F took 38 seconds rather than the 34 of the SCX-4600F, so the real difference between the two should be slight. And, in any case, this level of performance still remains very reasonable given the price.
The Samsung SCX-4623F is good on quality, with clean and accurate text reproduction, and an ability to generate plenty of detail while printing out graphical images - traditionally a weak area for mono laser printers.
