The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is a relatively inexpensive and unusually stylish take on the bog-standard pocket compact.
The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is a 10Mp model with a 10x optical zoom and, internally, it packs a Super CCD EXR sensor that can be used in three ways.
You can shoot normal 10Mp Jpegs or capture 5Mp photos with increased dynamic range, thus avoiding the usual bugbear of dark foregrounds or bleached out, detail-free backgrounds.
To achieve this the Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR takes two shots in succession - one at a high ISO setting, the other at a low ISO setting - and combines the two.
The third EXR option aims for high sensitivity but low noise.
The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR achieves this by coupling same-colour pixels to achieve larger light-gathering pixels. If this sounds a bit complicated, you can always leave the EXR setting on auto mode.
The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR also has digital SLR-like Pro Focus and Pro Low Light modes. The former blurs backgrounds on portraits to provide the look of having been shot with a high-quality telephoto lens, while the latter merges four shots at high-sensitivity settings to deliver one with less grain. Such features are cheats, but we wouldn't expect a compact snapper and a digital SLR to operate in the same way.
We were impressed that Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR was able to shoehorn a 10x optical zoom into a slim 23mm body, and there's a 2.7in LCD round the back. Shooting modes include one to match the unique look of film stock, along with the standard black-and-white and sepia modes.
The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR powers up in a couple of seconds and its buttons and controls are both large and responsive, although we found the zoom lever a bit loose. EXR and regular auto modes are selected via a tiny wheel at the back that falls conveniently under the thumb.
Shooting at ISO 12,800 delivers results closer to a watercolour than a photograph, but shots can be taken up to ISO 1,600 with surprisingly minimal noise. Plus you have all the additional features to tailor your images to the nth degree.
