HP Photosmart D7460 inkjet printer review

£149 inc VAT

Manufacturer: HP

Our Rating: We rate this 3 out of 5

The HP Photosmart D7460 is a wireless touchscreen inkjet printer that is difficult to fault at this price. Difficult, but by no means impossible.

The HP Photosmart D7460 is a wireless touchscreen inkjet printer that is difficult to fault at this price. Difficult, but by no means impossible.

Once you've gone through the slightly long-winded but pleasingly simple installation process, the first thing that strikes you about the HP Photosmart D7460 is the LCD screen. It's not just its size that impresses – although at 3.5in, it is relatively expansive – but its touchscreen capabilities.

Moving through various menus is so much easier when you can just press the relevant area. HP is no stranger to touchscreen technology (the Touchsmart series stands out amongst desktop PCs), and it's nice to see HP pushing it out on its printer range. It also makes the HP Photosmart D7460 very easy to use without a connected PC, particularly when used in conjunction with the memory card drive. You can also connect USB drives, although we didn't find this feature consistently flawless.

You're not restricted to a tethered USB or ethernet connection with the HP Photosmart D7460, as it majors on extensive wireless facilities. Both 802.11b/g networks and Bluetooth are supported, and the setup routine is slick and easy to negotiate.

But what of the printing facilities? Well, the HP Photosmart D7460 does really well on print quality. While not matching the visually opulent output of the Canon Pixma MX7600 - which is more than twice the price - in truth we fail to see how the majority of users could be anything but enthused by the ravishing colour and clarity of the HP Photosmart D7460's photo prints.

Speeds are very good too, with a high calibre of reproduction at the 2.5 pages per minute (ppm) rate. The fastest mode offers a top speed of 6.7ppm, and even here the print quality is high indeed – the HP Photosmart D7460's lowest-quality mode is on a par with the top modes of many a cheaper inkjet. You also get a separate photo paper tray, and this proves incredibly convenient for printing on to dedicated paper (up to 7x5in).

When a printer has obviously had such thought and care lavished upon it, it's a shame that it should be marred by something as simple as paper feed. Not all the HP Photosmart D7460's users have had the same problems, and it's possible that this fault affects only a few units, but you shouldn't have to gamble on something so fundamental. For its graphics and text output, and wireless capabilities, it is otherwise difficult to fault the HP Photosmart D7460 at this price.
