Available in stylish silver or matte black, the NEC 2190UXp is a good-looking LCD ‘MultiSync' device with an ultraslim 15.7mm frame.

The NEC 2190UXp's 21in screen display matches favourable first impressions with an equally impressive specification list.

This comprises the likes of AmbiBright technology – an energy-saving ambient light sensor – that aids the overall lower power consumption, a 178-degree viewing angle (handy if you want to gather friends and family around to show them your latest movies and pictures), plus a choice of three analogue or digital inputs.

The NEC 2190UXp's stand comes handily attached out of the box, with separate cable tidy that clips on the back. Unusually, there's a wheel on its base, which means that if you want to move the screen left or right the whole unit swivels at once.

Screen visibility is adjusted via a cluster of OSM (onscreen manager) controls located bottom right of the screen surround. These include a separate slider each for brightness and contrast, plus reset, menu selection and exit buttons. Among the onscreen menu options is the ability to adjust sharpness, which unlike some of the other monitors we've tested, actually made a noticeable difference on the NEC 2190UXp.

If you want to get really technical, you can adjust individual colour temperatures – plus their hue and saturation – proving a real boon for photographers. Another plus is that the NEC 2190UXp can be rotated landscape or portrait to make the most of screen real estate depending on what you're viewing.

The NEC 2190UXp unit is very simple to set up and get underway, with cables provided for both analogue and digital input. Like HP's competitor, an optional speaker bar can be added at the base of the unit if desired. The NEC 2190UXp's screen is sharp and crisp, and colours are vivid. Output can be adjusted in a thrice and the overall impression given is one of competence and reliability, presenting a viable option for those who don't want stretch budgets to the price of the LaCie.

Samsung has brought the style of its previous LCD television range to its latest LCD monitors. Though lacking the LED backlighting technology seen in many of the latest televisions and bereft of an HDMI port, the 21.5in Samsung SyncMaster P2250 LCD monitor provides good all-round image quality.
