It’s a little on the expensive side, but Devolo’s dLAN 200 AV Wireless N kit provides good performance and some useful extra features. See also D-Link W307AV PowerLine Homeplug AV Wireless N Starter Kit review.
The two adaptors provided in this starter kit look quite different. The primary adaptor – the one that connects to your router – is equipped with just a single Ethernet port and is therefore quite small. Visit Belkin Powerline AV+ Starter Kit F5D4075 review.
However, the second adaptor is almost twice as large as it usefully provides three separate Ethernet ports. That will be handy for people who need to connect multiple PCs, or devices such as a games console or TV set-top box that require a wired network connection.
This second adaptor also acts as wireless access point, allowing you to extend an existing 802.11n Wi-Fi network into areas – such as a garden or loft conversion – where the Wi-Fi signal might not normally be able to reach.
The adaptors are easy to set up, with push-button security to protect your network and a separate power switch for the Wi-Fi radio.
There’s also a program called Cockpit that is supplied for Windows, Mac and Ubuntu/Linux that provides additional features, such as the ability to set a timer for the Wi-Fi hotspot in order to limit access.
The adaptors performed well for a product in the 200Mbps category, backing up a 1GB test file in just under two minutes. This equates to 70Mbps.
However, we were a little surprised to see that Devolo includes only one Ethernet cable in the box: rather stingy as most home users won’t have spare cables to connect their set-top box or console to the second adaptor.
