D-Link DIR-855 review

£140.52 inc VAT

Manufacturer: D-Link

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

The D-Link DIR-855 looks and feels sturdy, but this quality comes at a price. As you might expect from its price tag, it’s a high-spec device with true dual-band capability.

The D-Link DIR-855 looks and feels sturdy, but this quality comes at a price. As you might expect from its price tag, it's a high-spec device with true dual-band capability. This means it can simultaneously broadcast draft-n at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

As well as four gigabit wired ports there's a handy USB port that's dedicated to network storage duties and printer sharing, although you'll first need to upgrade the D-Link DIR-855's firmware and install client software on each PC.

The D-Link DIR-855 eschews status LEDs in favour of a bright Oled status panel. You can display a range of useful information and diagnostic statistics, and D-Link makes a better fist of this than Belkin. After a short while it times out and turns off.

Inside, the web interface is well-organised and comprehensive. The D-Link DIR-855 also supports automatic firmware updates, helping to avoid hardware glitches and improve performance.

As the D-Link DIR-855 has two radios, you effectively have two wireless access points ‘on air'. It's simple to set up different ‘guest zones' on each band with different levels of security for each network - any wireless client connected to these guest networks get access to the internet, but not to your local LAN resources.

And it's fast, too. The D-Link DIR-855 delivered a swift, steady draft-n performance and, according to Iperf, it achieved a data transfer rate of 68 megabits per second (Mbps).

The D-Link DIR-855 is a fast, well-specified and well-built device. It's also expensive and, good though it is, this Wi-Fi router is only truly essential if you absolutely must have the dual-band capability or the USB port.
