Medion Akoya P6625 review

£569 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Medion

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

An inexpensive laptop, the Medion Akoya P6625 has no pretensions as a style icon.

An inexpensive laptop, the Medion Akoya P6625 has no pretensions as a style icon.

Please note that Medion UK has sold out of this model with Core i5 processor and 500GB, and is now only selling a similar version with slower Core i3 processor and reduced 320GB hard disk, at a higher price of £579

The Medion Akoya P6625 is solidly built (read: heavy) and a rather basic black design with glossy bits here and there to keep it interesting. It has a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad and dedicated buttons to activate the wireless networking and switch graphics modes – of which more later.

Inside the Medion Akoya P6625, Medion has managed to deliver a rather good specification. A 2.26GHz Intel Core i5-430M provides ample power and it's the same CPU found in Packard Bell's more expensive EasyNote TX86; yet the Akoya outpaces the TX86 with a score of 106 points in WorldBench 6 compared to the latter's 102-point score.

The Core i5 comes with Intel HD graphics built in, and Medion supplements this with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5165 chip. In our tests this delivered excellent 3D performance. With scores of 33.7 frames per second in Stalker: Call of Pripyat (SCoP) and 71fps when running FEAR, the Medion Akoya P6625 is around twice as fast as some similarly priced laptops, making it excellent value for gamers.

It’s also well stocked with ports. Three USB 2.0 sockets are supplemented by eSATA and an ExpressCard slot alongside the now-familiar VGA and HDMI connectors. With the Medion Akoya P6625 you also get the usual built-in webcam plus a multi-touch touchpad.

A big, 500GB hard drive and 4GB of DDR3-1066 memory are provided, while the 56Wh lithium-ion battery powers the Medion Akoya P6625 for just over four and a half hours when running MobileMark 2007. This is far from the longest-running, but it’s considerably longer than Advent’s Sienna 710.

The Medion Akoya P6625's 15.6in matt display avoids the distracting glare you'll get from the glossy screens provided elsewhere although a rather narrow vertical viewing angle is less than ideal.

While the Medion Akoya P6625 is clearly a budget product, Medion has actually done a very good job in providing a great, balanced specification. For the money, performance is excellent and gaming results are streets ahead of more expensive competition.
