Toshiba Portégé R600 review

Manufacturer: Toshiba

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Exceedingly small and light, the Toshiba Portégé R600 laptop is a little less extreme than Sony’s Vaio X, but Toshiba has managed to cram so many features into its tiny frame that it’s no less amazing.

Exceedingly small and light, the Toshiba Portégé R600 laptop is a little less extreme than Sony's Vaio X, but Toshiba has managed to cram so many features into its tiny frame that it’s no less amazing.

Coming in at just a fraction over 1kg, the Toshiba Portégé R600 notebook PC includes a built-in DVD super multi drive, three USB 2.0 ports, eSATA, a webcam, fingerprint reader, SD and ExpressCard slots and a 3G modem.

It’s also very power efficient, lasting for an impressive seven and a half hours under MobileMark 2007. While the Toshiba Portégé R600's 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 is most certainly slower than its bigger rivals here, it manages a respectable 79 points in WorldBench 6 – almost doubling the score of the Vaio X while still remaining incredibly light and portable. It also offers a spill-resistant keyboard with full-size keys and comes with a handy wireless on/off switch.

The 12.1in screen offers a matt transflective display which is designed to work without the need for the backlight when in brightly lit areas. This helps make further savings on battery life, although we found the image quality of the Toshiba Portégé R600 to be lower than other laptops due to rather poor viewing angles and a mild ‘dithered’ appearance to the whole image.

Integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics power the Toshiba Portégé R600's display, and while this won’t get you playing any 3D action games it will at least attempt to run them, which is more than can be said for the Vaio. However, this is a business machine and as such it provides all you need to work on the move while retaining maximum portability. When back at your desk you can use the optional port replicator to quickly plug into your office environment. It also comes with a built-in downgrade to Windows XP, should your IT department’s policies demand it.

Perhaps more importantly for the frequent traveller, the Toshiba Portégé R600 comes with a 3-year international warranty.
