Toshiba has done well with the Toshibe Satellite X200 20S, delivering a powerful, well-featured and attractive laptop.

Indeed we prefer the Toshiba Satellite X200 20S to some of the other gaming notebooks on the market, such as the gigantic Alienware Area-51 m9750 or Rock SL Pro.

It may be colossal at 3.8kg, but the Toshiba Satellite X200 20S seems durable and will be an ideal desktop-replacement PC, suitable for multimedia. It really shouldn’t be pigeonholed as purely a gaming laptop.

The Toshiba Satellite X200 20S's entertainment capabilities are enhanced by the inclusion of an HD-DVD drive. Its glossy marble-effect red casing is stylish and the silver interior is similarly sophisticated and pleasing to the eye.

We were impressed by how quiet the Toshiba Satellite X200 20S was during start up and operation. It's user friendly too, including a keyboard and trackpad with scrolling bar that's easy and comfortable to use.

Indeed, the keys on the Toshiba Satellite X200 20S are some of the lightest and most pleasing to use we have seen on a gaming laptop. And when you're going to be playing games, that's an important consideration.

With Dolby Home Theater, subwoofers and Harman Kadon speakers that blend nicely into the case design the Toshiba Satellite X200 20S delivers a full and high quality sound. The media playback buttons and quick-access keys also add to this well-kitted out machine.

The Toshiba Satellite X200 20S's 17in TFT screen has a high resolution of 1680 x 1050 and displays movies and games superbly, with a crisp image quality and vibrant colours.

The two 160GB hard drives also offer plenty of storage space for most laptop users. The X200 also supports connection to a, b, g and n wireless networks, features a switch to activate Wireless LAN and a 1.3Mp webcam.

    Toshiba Satellite L350-235

This Toshiba Satellite follows the example of our current top sub-£500 model, the Sony Vaio VGN-NS20J. The latter has crowned our budget chart for a few months thanks to its balance of price and performance, a feat that the Toshiba Satellite L350-235 carries off with only slightly less aplomb.
